THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s tennis returns to The Flats when it hosts Clemson and South Carolina to Ken Byers Tennis Complex on Friday, Feb. 16 and Sunday, Feb. 18.
The Yellow Jackets (3-4) open ACC action against the Tigers (5-1) on Friday, looking to remain undefeated at home with first serve scheduled for 5 p.m. Tech also welcomes its second SEC foe of the year to Atlanta, when it battles the 25th-ranked Gamecocks (9-2) at noon on Sunday.
Clemson is currently riding a four-match winning streak, getting wins over Army, Binghamton, Cornell and Georgia State. It’s lone loss this season came at the hands of UNC Charlotte, 4-3. No stranger to close calls, the Tigers have played in three 4-3 matches this season, winning two of them.
Clemson is led by No. 91 Alex Favrot in the singles rankings and is currently 3-1 in duals, 9-5 overall.
South Carolina is currently on a two-match win streak and has won five of it’s last seven. After a tough 4-3 loss to William & Mary, the Gamecocks went on to only drop one match over its next two, blitzing Howard, 7-0 and downing Old Dominion, 6-1.
USC has three singles players ranked in the ITAs with No. 87 Francisco Cerundolo out front. Yancy Dennis is currently 9-1 in duals while ranking 95th nationally while Gabriel Friedrich is 109th -ranked with his 8-2 duals mark.
Tech is coming off a hard-fought loss to fourth-ranked UGA, where its team of Carlos Divar and Michael Kay was able to take the No. 1 doubles match over the Bulldogs’ eighth-ranked tandem.
Divar still leads at the No. 1 singles, owning a 4-2 record in duals this season, contributing to his No. 39 ranking in the country. Elsewhere in singles, seniors Elijah Melendez and Kay have worked to 4-1 and 4-2 records, respectively. Daniel Yun (2-2), Andrew Li (1-1) and Phillip Gresk (1-1) all sit at .500 on the year thus far.
