ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team (10-1) will host Chicago State (5-6) in the opening game of the 2007 Georgia Tech Hotel & Conference Center Holiday Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 29 at Alexander Memorial Coliseum. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:00 p.m., with a matchup between Kennesaw State and Harvard immediately following the first game.
The Tech game can be followed on WREK radio (91.1 FM/www.wrek.org), Georgia Tech women’s basketball’s flagship station.
“We are looking forward to getting back on our home court and to host our annual holiday tournament,” head coach MaChelle Joseph said. “We haven’t played at the AMC since we played Georgia Southern on Dec. 9. I know our kids are anxious to play in front of their friends and families.”
Tech will meet the Cougars for the first time in the opening round matchup. The Jackets have faced six independent teams, registering a 21-3 all-time record against these programs, including a 75-46 win over Longwood last season.
“Chicago State is a very athletic team that plays a style of basketball very similar to ours,” Joseph said. “We expect an up-tempo game with a lot of running and pressing.”
Freshman Alex Montgomery became the second Jacket to receive Atlantic Coast Conference honors this season after recording her first career double-double in the Jackets win over Georgia State last Saturday. The Tacoma, Wash. native was named ACC Rookie of the Week, the first Jacket to do so since Chioma Nnamaka garnered the honor for the week of Dec. 27, 2004. Senior Janie Mitchell, a two-time ACC Player of the Week this season, has averaged 21.4 points over the last five games.
The tournament will continue on Sunday morning, with the losing teams meeting in the tournament’s consolation game at 11:30 a.m., followed by the championship game at 1:30 p.m.
