ATLANTA — The Georgia Tech golf team, ranked 16th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, will return to action after a three-week layoff by competing in the Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational this weekend. The 54-hole event, which will feature 36 holes of play on Saturday and 18 on Sunday, will be contested at the par-72, 6,840-yard Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.
As has been the case throughout the season, one of the nation’s top fields will await the Yellow Jackets this weekend. As four of the nation’s top-10 teams according to the Golfweek/Sagarin poll will be in the tournament, led by top-ranked Clemson, fourth-ranked Wake Forest, eighth-ranked Oklahoma State and host Augusta State, which is currently the nation’s ninth-ranked team. Ten of the 17 teams in the field are ranked among the top 20 and all but two teams are among the top-40 teams in the country.
Tech is coming off of an eighth-place finish at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in Austin, Texas. Senior Troy Matteson led the Jackets in that event, tying for 17th at 1-under-par, 73-74-68-215. Georgia Tech has finished in the top 10 in all but three events this year, including five of its last six outings.
Matteson continues to be the team’s top individual performer, leading the squad with a 71.22 stroke average with three top-10 finishes and six top 20s in eight tournaments. Sophomore Nicholas Thompson will join Matteson in the lineup this week and is currently second on the team with a 72.30 stroke average.
The Yellow Jackets will have the same lineup that has started each of the last four tournaments, as rounding out the Tech contingent in the field will be sophomore Chan Wongluekiet, freshman Thomas Jordan and senior Adam Cranford.
