THE FLATS – No. 19 Georgia Tech’s offense was held to a season-low four hits Tuesday night as the Georgia Bulldogs knocked off the Yellow Jackets 3-1 at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Senior RHP Cole Pitts (3-2) was dealt the hard-luck loss after he allowed only one run on five hits with three strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Georgia’s Andrew Gist (3-1) lasted a career-best 8.0 innings and limited Tech to one run on four hits.

Tuesday’s loss was Georgia Tech’s first against an in-state school in 2016. Georgia Tech was 5-0 against in-state rivals before the Georgia game. Tech also fell to 7-2 in midweek games this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Starters Cole Pitts and Andrew Gist exchanged four scoreless frames until Georgia finally broke through in the 5th. Pitt threw only two pitches to get the first two outs. However, Mitchell Webb laced a two-out double to right-center and Nick King followed with an RBI triple to left-center.
• Georgia added one more run in the 6th to take a 2-0 lead. With two on and one out, Michael Curry drove a single to center field for UGA’s second run.
• The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the 8th for a 3-0 lead.
• Georgia Tech finally scratched the scoreboard in the 9th on Ryan Peurifoy’s lead-off home run to left field. Blake Cairnes replaced Gist on the mound and promptly struck out Wade Bailey, Connor Justus and Matt Gonzalez to end the game.

• Junior CF Ryan Peurifoy hit his first home run of the season and his first since May 6, 2015, at Mercer. Tuesday was only Tech’s fourth loss when hitting a home run (15-4).
• Freshman C Joey Bart threw out two would-be base stealers Tuesday night.
• Senior LF Matt Gonzalez recorded his sixth outfield assist of the season.
• Junior SS Connor Justus made his career-best 71st straight start.
