Greensboro, N.C. – Georgia Tech’s Stephanie Higgs was named this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week recipient after notching an impressive performance last week. Higgs helped the Yellow Jackets pull off an upset over defending national champion Maryland, giving Tech one of the biggest wins in school history.
Higgs led all scorers with 26 points in the 77-72 upset of No. 4 Maryland on Thursday, Feb. 1, and was the only player from either team to score more than 20 points. The senior’s 26-point display against the Terps marks the fifth time this season she has scored at least 20 points in a game. Higgs made all but three of her 16 free-throw attempts and was the only player to come away with three steals. The veteran guard is sixth in the league in scoring, averaging 15.3 points per game.
Higgs, who scored her 1,000th career point earlier in the season, became the first player in the ACC to score more than 30 points in a game when she tallied 36 in a road win over Northwestern. Higgs remains one of only three ACC players, along with Miami’s Renee Taylor and North Carolina’s Ivory Latta, to score more than 30 points in a game this season.
Georgia Tech (14-8, 5-3) will face Virginia Tech (15-9, 4-4) at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 5 at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va.
