TEAM NOTES
- Head coach Brian Gregory announced Friday that seniors Marcus Georges-Hunt and Charles Mitchell and junior Quinton Stephens would serve as team captains for the 2015-16 season.
- Gregory also announced before tonight’s game that 6-9 sophomore Abdoulaye Gueye (ab-DOO-lay GAY) and 6-10 freshman Sylvester Ogbonda (oh-BOND-uh) would sut out the 2015-16 season as red-shirts.
- Georgia Tech won its season opener for the seventh straight year and 32nd time in 36 seasons since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference.
- Tech out-rebounded Cornell 48-24. The Yellow Jackets finished last season with a school-record rebound margin of +7.3 (+4.4 in ACC games), and out-rebounded 24 of 31 opponents.
- Tech’s 116 points were the fifth most in the program’s history and the most since the Yellow Jackets scored 120 vs. Texas in the Pre-Season NIT on Nov. 27, 1991.
- Tech reached the 100-point mark with seven minutes left in the game. It was the first time the Jackets have reached the century mark since Nov. 14, 2009 vs. Florida A&M (100-59).
- Tech placed five or more players (actually seven tonight) for the first time since Feb. 18, 2012 vs. Virginia Tech. Ten of Tech’s 12 players who dressed scored in the game.
- Tech scored 57 points in the first half, 11 more than the Yellow Jackets highest-scoring half of last season, and 59 in the second half. They were Tech’s highest scoring half since amassing 64 in the second half against Tennessee State on November 11, 2007.
- Tech’s 47 field goals made were the sixth most in program history and the most for the Jackets in a game since making 51 vs. Loyola Marymount on Dec. 22, 1990.
- Tech’s 30 assists tied for the sixth most in program history. The last time the Jackets had 30 or more occurred Nov. 16, 2006 against Georgia State (also 30).
- Tech shot 60.3 percent (47-for-78) from the floor, the highest in 127 games under head coach Brian Gregory. The previous high was 58.3 percent vs. Virginia Tech (28-for-48) on Feb. 18, 2012. The Jackets made 64.9 percent of their shots in the second half.
- Tech committed only six turnovers against Cornell, matching a low (vs. four other teams) for a Yellow Jacket team under Brian Gregory. Starting point guard Josh Heath had three of those.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
- Charles Mitchell scored in double digits (21) for the third straight game dating back to last season. It was his 16th double-digit game in a Tech uniform, and the 32nd of his career. He made 10 of 11 shots from the floor.
- Mitchell also grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds and posted his eighth double-double a Tech uniform. It was his 20th career double-figure rebound game.
- James White scored 14 points with 11 rebounds, giving Tech two players with double-doubles for the first time since Jan. 31 of last season against NC State, when Mitchell (18/11) and Demarco Cox (12/10) turned the trick.
- Adam Smith scored 13 points and also had five assists with no turnovers in his Georgia Tech debut. He scored in double digits for the 55th time in his career.
- Josh Heath (7 assists, 3 turnovers) and Travis Jorgenson (5 assists, 0 turnovers) combined for 12 assists and three turnovers. They had a combined 1.95-1 assist-turnover ratio last season. Add in Adam Smith, another primary ballhandler, the trio collectively had 17 assists and three turnovers in the game.
- Marcus Georges-Hunt scored 17 points and reached double figures for the 64th time in 95 career games at Georgia Tech.
- Georges-Hunt passed Jim Nolan for 34th place on Tech’s all-time scoring list, and now has 1,144 career points. He needs 10 to reach Jim Caldwell, who holds 33rd place with 1,154.
- Quinton Stephens reached double figures (13 points) for the 10th time in his Tech career.
- Tadric Jackson reached double figures (11 points) for seventh time in his Tech career.
- Nick Jacobs reached double figures (13 points) for the 28th time in his career.
- Tech’s quartet of big men (Jacobs, Mitchell, Lammers, White) has played 304 games combined in their college careers. They collectively had just two turnovers against Cornell.
