Postgame Notes: Georgia Tech 4, Florida State 3 (ACC Tournament)

• Tech improved to 10-10 versus ranked teams this year, but is 6-4 versus teams ranked seventh or higher.

• As the eighth-seed last season, Tech began its 2012 ACC championship run with a 5-4 win over the top-seeded Seminoles at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro, N.C. Tech became the first-ever eighth-seed to beat a one-seed in tournament play, and eventually became the first-ever eighth-seed to win the title.

• Since 2006, the seventh-seed in now 5-3 in games versus the second-seed on the tournament’s opening day.

• Tech hit its 55th and 56th home runs this season, to extend their ACC lead in that category. The Jackets hit 53 homers last year to lead the league.

• Georgia Tech turned its ACC-leading 56th and 57th double plays in Wednesday’s game. With 57, Tech has matching its number from last season. The school record for double plays in a season is 71, set in 1985.

• Senior Buck Farmer’s personal scoreless streak versus Florida State was ended at 14 consecutive innings. He pitched the final two scoreless vs. FSU in 2012 ACC Tournament; seven scoreless in a 10-0 win vs. the Noles in Tallahassee earlier this season and five today.

• Tech’s back-to-back homers with two outs in the ninth from A.J. Murray and Mott Hyde to tie the game and take the lead marked the fourth time this season the Jackets went back-to-back

• The two homers hit by Murray and Hyde were the first allowed by FSU closer Robby Coles this season

• All six of Mott Hyde’s homers this season have come over the last 21 games. He has three career homers in ACC Tournament play (hitting two last year).

• Tech improved to 22-9 in day games (Tech is 12-14 in night games).

• The Jackets won for the third time this year when trailing after the eighth inning (3-20) – two have come over the last 10 days as Tech trailed UNC 8-5 in the ninth on May 12, before scoring three in the ninth and winning the game with a walk-off single from Zane Evans in the 11th to win the series.
