SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The Georgia Tech softball team (0-2) fell to Illinois (2-0), 10-1, on Friday at the Puerto Rican National Stadium. The Jackets will rematch against Cal and Illinois on Saturday. Tech takes on Cal at 9 a.m. ET, followed by the Illini at 11:30 a.m. ET.
How It Happened
Illinois jumped out of the gate with two hits in the first inning. With runners on third and first, the Illini were able to push the runner across the plate on a delayed steal attempt. Illinois added another run in the third to take a 2-0 lead.
The Fighting Illini slowly added to their lead with one run in each of the fourth and fifth innings to extend their lead to 4-0. Three runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings put Illinois ahead, 10-1.
The Jackets got on the board in the bottom of the seventh. Draven Sonnon reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second. Malea Bell stepped to the plate and doubled to centerfield to bring in Sonnon.
Freshman Brooke Barfield suffered the loss throwing all seven innings in her debut. Illinois’ Taylor Edwards earned the win, allowing six hits in six innings pitched before Danielle Brochu came in for the seventh inning.
