Smith, Nnamaka, and Lapsley Named Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week

Jeremis Smith, Chioma Nnamaka and Andriane Lapsley were named Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, December 5, 2005.

Smith, a sophomore from Fort Worth, Texas, achieved career highs in points in both of Tech’s games last week, helping the Yellow Jackets to their first conference win over Virginia Sunday after nearly upsetting No. 13 Michigan State on Wednesday. Smith notched his first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds against the Spartans, making 6 of 10 shots from the floor as Tech fell short, 88-86. Against the Cavaliers, he led the Jackets with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting, pulled nine rebounds, had two assists and three steals to lift the Jackets to a 63-54 win.

Nnamaka, a sophomore from Uppsala, Sweden, averaged 18.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game this past week, shooting over 45 percent from the floor, including over 37 percent from beyond the three-point arc, while converting on all eight of her free-throw attempts. Against Georgia State, she recorded the first double-double of her career, tying a season-high with 22 points while pulling down a career-high 10 rebounds against the Jackets’ cross-town rival.

Lapsley, a senior from San Antonio, Texas, won the 60- and 200-meter dash events to lead the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams at the Clemson Opener on Saturday afternoon. Lapsley clocked a NCAA Provisional time of 7.42 in the 60m, posted a winning time of 24.33 in the 200m and finished second in the 60-meter high hurdles with a time of 8.51.
