ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech golf team heads to Santa Cruz, Calif. to take part in the 58th annual Western Intercollegiate to be held Monday and Tuesday at the Pasatiempo Golf Course (6,445 yards/Par 70).
The tournament, which begins Monday, will carry a standard 4-of-5 scoring format, with 36 holes to be played Monday and 18 holes to be played Tuesday. Tee times will begin at 11:00 a.m. EST each morning.
Georgia Tech (No. 4) is the highest ranked team of the 15 teams competing. The field includes No. 16 California, No. 27 Kansas, and No. 28 Colorado State. Five individuals are ranked in the top 25 and twelve are ranked in the top 100, including Nicholas Thompson (No. 44) and Kent Larsen (No. 71) of Georgia Tech.
The Jackets are entering the event coming off of a sixth place finish in the Southern Highlands Collegiate in Las Vegas. In the event, Tech was paced by Chan Wongleukiet who tied for eleventh, shooting a 212 (-4). Also in the top 25 for the Jackets were Roberto Castro and Thompson who both posted scores of 218 and finished tied for 24th.
Thompson (71.70) and Castro (71.85) both have scoring averages for the year under 72. Thompson and Castro each have a pair of top-10 finishes to their credit, while Larsen has one. Wongluekiet has averaged 72.43 for the year and has Tech’s only top-10 individual finish this spring, a tie for fifth at the Waikoloa event in Hawaii. Mike Barbosa has averaged 74.20 strokes and has one top-20 finish in five events.
This spring Tech has won one event, the Taylor Made Waikoloa Intercollegiate, and finished in the top ten one other time.
