MIAMI – Sophomore Sasha Goodlett led four Yellow Jackets in double-figures as the 24th-ranked Georgia Tech women’s basketball team (12-2) captured the 2009 Sun & Fun Classic with a 68-57 win over host Florida International (6-7) Tuesday afternoon.

Goodlett scored a team-high 17 points. Senior Brigitte Ardossi, the 2009 Sun & Fun Classic MVP, scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds but was limited to only 23 minutes due to foul trouble. Sophomore Mo Bennett registered 11 points and junior Alex Montgomery scored 10 points off the bench on her way to being named to the All-Tournament team.

“I am proud of the kids for finding a way to win tonight,” head coach MaChelle Joseph said. “Sasha made some huge plays for us along with Mo Bennett.”

Georgia Tech opened a 22-12 lead on the Golden Panthers with 7:58 remaining before the half but a furious 10-0 run by FIU over the next two minutes brought the score even with 5:32 on the clock. Tech would regain the lead and enter the locker room with a 32-30 advantage.

The Jackets and Golden Panthers traded baskets for the first 10 minutes of the second half but an 11-2 run over the next five minutes put the Jackets ahead for good. Tech shot 43 percent for the game and recorded 15 assists over only 14 turnovers.

FIU’s Rakia Rodgers led all scorers with 18 points off the bench. Monika Bosilj added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Golden Panthers.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action in the New Year when they face Army on Saturday, Jan. 2. Tip-off at Alexander Memorial Coliseum in the Henry F. McCamish Basketball Complex is scheduled for 2 p.m.
