THE FLATS – Matt Kuchar and Stewart Cink continued their solid 2016-17 campaigns last weekend, each earning a top-30 finish at the Valspar Championship as the Florida Swing resumed.
Kuchar tied for 22nd place (281, -3) and nudged ahead to No. 71 in FedEx Cup points, while Cink tied for 27th (282, -2) and stands 51st in points. Three other former Yellow Jackets missed the cut, however, but all three – Ollie Schniederjans (48), Cameron Tringale (103) and Richy Werenski (105) remain in the top 125 required to make the playoffs.
Cink, Schniederjans and Roberto Castro (86th in points) qualified for the more exclusive field this week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at the Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Orlando, which begins Thursday.
The PGA Tour Champions Tour resumes this week in Tucson, Ariz., after a month-long break, and former Tech star and 1987 masters Champion Larry Mize ranks 30th on the Charles Schwab Cup money list for 2017. The Web.com Tour, which has been idle since Feb. 19, resumes next week in Louisiana.
In the third round of the 2017 Valspar Championship, Matt Kuchar’s 71-foot chip shot from the other side of the green lands within inches for a great par save on the par-5 5th hole.
