GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech’s Alex Montgomery and Maryland’s Laura Harper were named Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Rookie and Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 24, the ACC office announced Wednesday.
Montgomery registered her first career double-double in a 79-67 win against Georgia State last week, while Harper helped the Terrapins to a come-from-behind victory at James Madison.
Montgomery registered her first career double-double in leading Tech over Georgia State, 79-67, last Saturday. The rookie from Tacoma, Wash., set career-highs in points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks in the road win over the Panthers. Montgomery has run the point for the Jackets this season, starting all 11 games, while the guard is also the third leading scorer on the team behind seniors Chioma Nnamaka and Janie Mitchell.
“Alex is very deserving of this honor,” head coach MaChelle Joseph said. “She continues to improve on both ends of the floor. I am excited to watch her develop into the impact player we knew she would become.”
Harper, a senior from Elkins Park, Pa., led her 5th-ranked Terps to a come-from-behind victory on the road at James Madison, scoring 24 points while grabbing nine rebounds. The win snapped the Dukes’ 30-game home win streak, which was the longest active home win streak in the nation. Harper was 80 percent from the floor and the charity stripe. She was one rebound short of her fifth double-double of the season and the 24 points and nine boards were both season-highs. Ranked third all-time at Maryland in career blocks, Harper recorded another block against JMU, her fourth straight game with a block and her 12th game this season.
Montgomery and the Yellow Jackets will see their next action on Saturday, Dec. 29, in a 12 p.m. contest against Chicago State in Atlanta, Ga., as part of the Georgia Tech Hotel & Conference Center Holiday Tournament.
