Dec. 10, 2007

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s Janie Mitchell was named Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week and Boston College’s Stefanie Murphy was named ACC Rookie of the Week after both averaged over 20 points in a pair of team victories for their respective squads, the ACC office announced Monday.

Mitchell led Georgia Tech in two home wins against South Carolina Upstate and Georgia Southern, improving the Yellow Jackets’ record to 7-1 on the early season.

Mitchell became the 22nd player in Georgia Tech women’s basketball history to notch 1,000 points in a career in Tech’s convincing win, 92-45, over visiting USC Upstate. The senior from Jackson, Miss., posted 24 points and eight rebounds in the victory. Mitchell is only the 15th player in Tech history to register 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in a career. To follow that, the veteran notched a 19-point, seven-rebound performance in Georgia Tech’s 78-50 win over Georgia Southern. On the week, Mitchell shot 80 percent from the free throw line.

Murphy helped the Eagles capture two victories, extending the Eagles’ win streak to five consecutive games. The 6-foot-4 freshman averaged 24 points and 12.5 rebounds in the two games.
