SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Georgia Tech track and field men’s DMR team won on day one of the Meyo Invitational. Competition picks back up on Saturday morning.
“We had a very good day one here at the Meyo Inv,” said men’s track and field head coach Grover Hinsdale. “Several guys ran PRs and we looked much sharper than we did last weekend. Zach Gunnz and Tyson looked good in advancing to tomorrow’s semifinal as did Andreas Ward in the 60m hurdles. The DMR team looked very good. Nahom Solomon looked good in running an indoor PR in the 5000m.”
The distance medley relay team of Chris Burnett, Dwayne Watkins, Andres Littig and Avery Bartlett won the event for the Yellow Jackets, posting a time of 9:52.53, a season best for Tech. Senior Zachary Gunnz took a second-place finish in the 200m with a time of 21.51. Freshman Tyson Spears posted a career-best time of 21.78 in the event. Spears also recorded a career-best time of 6.84 in the 60m dash prelims, qualifying for the semifinals in the process. Gunnz also qualified for the semifinals of the 60m dash with a time of 6.88. Andreas Ward qualified for the semifinals of the 60-meter hurdles, posting a time of 8.29 in prelims. Tanner Shaw notched an indoor track career best in the men’s 5000-meter run with a time of 14:45.40. Nahom Solomon registered an indoor career-best time of 14:36.78 in the 5000m.
“I was happy with today,” said women’s track head coach Alan Drosky. “Donjhae had a really nice personal best in the long jump. The hurdlers, Kenya, Jeanine, and Raven, all advanced to the semi-finals tomorrow, and Mary set a new personal best in the 5000m. So across the board we competed well, and will look for more of the same tomorrow.”
Donjhae Jones posted an indoor career-best mark of 6.08 in the women’s long jump on her way to a third-place finish. Kenya Collins, Jeanine Williams and Raven Stewart all qualified for the semifinals of the 60m hurdles. Williams also set a career-best time of 7.67 in the 60m dash prelims. Sophomore Mary Prouty registered a career-best time of 17:11.44 in the 5000-meter run.
