Marshall Named Georgia Women's College Player of the Year

March 11, 2014

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech women’s basketball senior Tyaunna Marshall has been named the Georgia Women’s College Player of the Year for the second-straight year, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Tuesday.

This is the fifth straight year that a Yellow Jacket has won the award after Marshall also garnered the honor in 2012-13. A Tech player has claimed the honor in six of the last seven years. Marshall’s honor marks the sixth time a Jacket has been named the Georgia Women’s College Player of the Year under head coach MaChelle Joseph.

Marshall has had quite an impressive senior season this year. The 5’9″ guard was named to the All-ACC First Team and All-ACC Defensive Team for the second-straight year by both the coaches and the media. Marshall is the first Yellow Jacket to be named to the All-ACC First Team twice in her career and is just the fourth Jacket to earn All-ACC First Team accolades.

The Upper Marlboro, Md. native became Georgia Tech’s all-time leading scorer against #13/11 North Carolina on Feb. 6, 2014 after scoring 32 points against the Tar Heels to break Kisha Ford’s record of 1,955 points. She hit two free throws with 4.3 seconds left to break the record and secure the Jackets’ first win against a ranked opponent since 2012.

Following her record breaking performance, Marshall was the first Jacket to be named the espnW National Player of the Week and was honored as the ACC Player of the Week for the fourth time in her career. Marshall’s 589 points this season puts her just eight shy of breaking the school record of points in a season that Joyce Pierce set during the 1991-92 with 596 points.Marshall also became the first Jacket to score 2,000 career points and the 24th ACC player to do so.

Marshall leads the Jackets in scoring, rebounding and steals. Her 19.6 ppg ranks third in the ACC and 42nd in the nation. Marshall is eighth in the ACC with her 7.6 rpg and her 3.1 apg has her in 15th. Marshall is first in the conference with 2.7 steals per game and ranks 20th in the nation in steals. She leads all active ACC players in career 20 point games with 40. Her 2,109 points has her at 18th on the ACC career total points list.

Marshall and the Yellow Jackets are currently preparing for the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Selection Show will air on Monday, March 17 at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
