Lewis, Martinez Are Top Scorers In Basketball Scrimmages

ATLANTA–Freshman Marvin Lewis led the Georgia Tech men’s basketball team with 20 points, while junior Milli Martinez paced the women’s squad with 13 points in the annual Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Intrasquad Scrimmage Saturday at Alexander Memorial Coliseum at McDonald’s Center.

Each team scrimmaged for 20 minutes with a running clock. For the men, the Blue squad defeated the Gold, 39-30, as Tech fans had their first opportunity to view head coach Paul Hewitt’s face-paced attack. In the women’s scrimmage, the White team downed the Gold, 36-18.

Lewis, a 6-3 wing from Germantown, Md., nailed his first seven shots, including four three-pointers. For the game, he was eight-for-11 from the field with four rebounds. Freshman center Robert Brooks (Saginaw, Mich.) added eight points for the Blue.

Freshman Halston Lane, a 6-4 wing from Oak Ridge, Tenn., led the Gold team with 12 points and four rebounds. Senior center Alvin Jones (Lakeland, Fla.) had five points and 14 rebounds, and senior guard Darryl LaBarrie (Decatur, Ga.) chipped in 13 points.

In the women’s scrimmage, Martinez, a junior guard from Imlay City, Mich., scored 13 of the Gold’s 18 points on four field goals and five-of-six free throws. For the White team, sophomore guard Alex Stewart (Norcross, Ga.) had nine points, four rebounds and four steals. Sophomore center Sonja Mallory (Bronx, N.Y.) had eight points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Megan Isom (Decatur, Ga.), a transfer from Tennessee Tech who will sit out this season, added eight points. Playing on both teams, sophomore center Tamika Boatner (Memphis, Tenn.) contributed three points and seven rebounds.

The Tech men face their first outside competition next Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Georgia Dome in an exhibition against the California All-Stars, featuring former Yellow Jacket Drew Barry and former North Carolina standout Ed Cota. The Tech women, who won their first exhibition Friday with a 95-73 victory over Sweden’s Basketball Travellers, host a second exhibition against Athletes in Action next Thursday at 5 p.m. at Alexander Memorial Coliseum at McDonald’s Center.
