LaSondra Barrett Named Assistant Coach

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech women’s basketball head coach Nell Fortner announced today LaSondra Barrett has joined the Yellow Jackets as an assistant coach. Barrett has spent the last three seasons at Houston.

“We’re extremely excited to welcome LaSondra “Boogie” Barrett to Georgia Tech,” said Fortner. “LaSondra is making her way up the ranks as an excellent collegiate women’s basketball coach, just like she worked her way through an excellent collegiate career at LSU. She’ll be in charge of our post players and post development, so I know we are in good hands with her leading our players at that position. I can’t wait to get her to Atlanta and start working with our players.”

“I’m extremely excited to join the Georgia Tech family,” commented Barrett. “I can’t wait to work with such an amazing staff and a legendary coach in Nell Fortner. It’s a full circle moment for me to be working with some familiar faces and even greater people. The staff has ignited something great on The Flats with positive energy and a winning culture. I plan to continue that vision for our student-athletes’ development, on and off the court.”

A former all-American at LSU, Barrett brings a wealth of coaching experience to The Flats. She arrived at Houston in 2019-20 as the director of recruiting operations before being elevated to an assistant coach in 2020-21, working primarily with the post players. While with the Cougars, she helped lead the team to a pair of postseason WNIT appearances, advancing to the round of 16 this past season.

Prior to her stint at Houston, Barrett had coaching stops at Louisiana Tech (2018-19) and Florida International (2016-17), both as an assistant coach. In 2018-19 while at Louisiana Tech, Barrett helped tutor all-CUSA first team selection Kierra Anthony to a remarkable season, ranking first in the C-USA and fourth nationally in scoring.

A native of Jackson, Miss., Barrett was a four-year letterwinner at LSU (2009-12), playing for current Georgia Tech associate head coach Tasha Butts her senior season in 2011-12. Named the 2009 Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year, Barrett also garnered all-SEC honors twice during her collegiate career. Following her junior and senior seasons, she was named a WBCA Honorable Mention All-America honoree. In her four seasons at LSU, she helped the Tigers to three NCAA Tournament appearances and finished with over 1,500 points and 800 rebounds in her career.

Barrett became the seventh player in LSU program history to be selected in the first round of the WNBA Draft, taken 10th overall by the Washington Mystics in 2012. For her outstanding career, she was named LSU’s 2016 SEC Women’s Legend. Following LSU, Barrett played three seasons professionally – one season in Israel and two in Australia.

After her professional career, Barrett returned to LSU and spent two seasons (2014-16) as the director of player personnel. In that role, she was responsible for all non-conference scheduling, academic and alumni relations.

Barrett graduated from LSU in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in sports administration with an emphasis in business commerce. She earned her master’s degree in sports management in 2016.
