Kyle Wren Named to Freshman All-America Teams

June 13, 2011

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech outfielder Kyle Wren has been named to the 2011 Louisville Slugger and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Freshman All-America Teams.

Wren, a freshman from Peachtree City, Ga., started all 63 games in centerfield and concluded the 2011 season as the ACC-leader in hits with 90. No Georgia Tech player has ever led the conference in hits.

He batted .340 in his first season on the Flats, with 57 runs scored, 11 doubles, one home run and 32 RBI. Wren also had a conference leading seven triples, stole 16 bases, and was named to the All-ACC First Team.

A graduate of Landmark Christian in 2010, Wren recorded a hit in 50 of the 63 games this season and reached base safely in all but seven of them.

Former standouts Jason Varitek, Nomar Garciaparra, Mark Teixeira and Matt Wieters were all named Freshman All-Americans in their first seasons at Georgia Tech, and Wren becomes the 29th player in school history to receive the honor. Current teammate Matt Skole was tabbed to Louisville Slugger’s Freshman All-America squad in 2009.

A total of four players from the Atlantic Coast Conference were named to respective Freshman All-America teams this season. Joining Wren on the squad are North Carolina’s Colin Moran, Clemson’s Kevin Poole and Chris Marconcini of Duke.

Wren and Moran are the only two to be named to both Louisville Slugger and NCBWA freshman All-America teams.
