Johnson Named ACC Player of the Week

Feb. 16, 2015

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech freshman Kel Johnson was named the ACC Baseball Player of the Week on Monday on the heels of big weekend in his debut with the Yellow Jackets.

The Palmetto, Ga., native hit .571 with five RBIs on eight hits, including three doubles and two home runs, to lead the Yellow Jacket offense on opening weekend. In his collegiate debut on Friday night against St. John’s, Johnson went 4-for-5, becoming the first Georgia Tech freshman since Derik Goffena (4-for-4) versus UCLA in 1998 to collect four or more hits on opening day.

For the weekend, the rookie slugged 1.214 with a .571 on-base percentage. He leads the league in total bases (17) and is tied for the ACC lead in hits (8) and home runs (2) and is second in doubles (3).

Tech finished the weekend with a 2-1 record, beating St. John’s, 17-3, on Friday night and splitting a Saturday doubleheader versus Fordham. The 17 runs on Opening Day were the second-most in a season-opener in school history.

The Yellow Jackets hit the road this week for a Tuesday night game at Georgia Southern (6pm on ESPN3) before traveling to Coastal Carolina this weekend.
