Jackets Sting Cardinals, 7-0

THE FLATS – The 3rd-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team improved to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in ACC play on Sunday afternoon, sweeping Louisville 7-0 at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex. The win improved the Jackets to 6-0 at home on the season.

DOUBLES ACTION: The Jackets quickly got on the winning track, capturing the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Tech’s doubles pair of Nami Otsuka and Nadia Gizdova pocketed their first dual win of the season, making quick work of Louisville’s Aleksandra Mally and Ariana Rodriguez, 6-1. The point was clinched for the Jackets on court two where Johnnise Renaud and Ida Jarlskog broke Sena Suswam/Raven Nelly to take a 5-3 lead. Renaud served out the match for a 6-3 Tech win, clinching the early lead for the Jackets.

SINGLES ACTION: The Jackets took the first set on five courts and claimed the first three singles matches to finish in straight sets to clinch the match over the Cardinals. Competing at No. 3, Jones dropped just five games to pick up a 6-3, 6-2 win over Pahz to put Tech up 2-0. Next off the courts, Otsuka put the Jackets on the verge of victory, winning at No. 5 over Neely. The sophomore pocketed the first set 6-3 after erasing an early 0-2 deficit and took the second set in a tiebreak, 7-1.

Leading the match at 3-0, Tech needed just one more singles win to clinch the contest and it came at No. 6 where Gizdova battled Maya Smith. Gizdova recorded her first conference win of the season, easily taking the first set 6-2. Leading in the second set, Gizdova broke serve to clinch the match with a 6-3 second set win.

Competing at No. 1 for the first time in conference play, senior Renaud defeated Mally in three sets. After taking the first set 6-2, Renaud battled back from dropping the second set, 6-3, to win the match cruising to a 6-1 third set win to put Tech up 5-0. Jarlskog edged Huber at No. 3, grabbing the first set 6-3, and cruising in the second set tiebreak, 7-0.

Wrapping up play at No. 2, Hourigan forced a third set tiebreak, coming back from dropping the first set to Humberg to win the second set in a tiebreak. Hourigan led in the third set tiebreak, 10-5, to complete the sweep of the Cardinals.

QUOTABLE: “It was a good match today. I thought we played good tennis on virtually every court. Obviously we still have a lot of things to work on, but right now I think we’ve made good progress. We are looking forward to a really tough match on Friday at Northwestern.” Head Coach Rodney Harmon

UP NEXT: Completing the homestand, the Jackets hit the road for a non-conference tilt at Northwestern on Friday. First serve is slated for 3:30 p.m.
