Jackets Outlast Broncos in Overtime

ATLANTA (Dec. 29) — Sophomore Milli Martinez recorded her first career double-double with a career-high 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead five Georgia Tech players in double figures as the Yellow Jackets downed Western Michigan, 95-89, in overtime Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the 1999 Georgia Tech/Atlanta Marriott Northwest Holiday Invitational at O’Keefe Gymnasium.

Freshman Alex Stewart also scored a career-high 16 points for the Jackets (8-2), who advance to the tournament championship game at 4 p.m. Thursday. Tech will meet Pittsburgh, 70-60 winners over Campbell in the other first-round match-up, in the title game.

Western Michigan (2-7) will meet Campbell in the consolation game at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Tech junior Regina Tate added a season-high 16, and junior Jaime Kruppa also finished with 16. Junior Candice McCallum scored 14.

Stewart gave Tech a four-point lead at 83-79 with just 49 seconds left in regulation before the Broncos rallied to force the extra period.

Western Michigan’s Danielle Mueller converted a three-point play with 37 seconds left to pull the Broncos to within one at 83-82.

Tate then gave the Jackets a two-point advantage after going 1-for-2 from the free throw line before Western’s Kristin Koetsier hit a jumper to knot the game at 84 with 20 seconds left.

The Jackets had an opportunity to win in regulation, but Kruppa had her last second shot in the lane blocked by Mueller.

The Broncos scored the first basket in the overtime before the Jackets went on an 8-0 run to take control.

Western Michigan’s Shelsea Erving led all scorers with 23 points all of which came in the second half.

ATLANTA (Dec. 29) — Mandy Wittenmyer scored a game-high 14 points to lead Pittsburgh to a 70-60 women’s basketball win over Campbell Wednesday night in the first round of the Georgia Tech/Atlanta Marriott Northwest Holiday Invitational at O’Keefe Gymnasium.

The Panthers (7-3) will meet tourney host Georgia Tech, 95-89 overtime winners over Western Michigan in the other first round game, at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the championship game. Campbell (6-3) will face Western Michigan at 2 p.m. in the consolation game.

Pittsburgh opened up a 14 point halftime advantage and led by as many as 21 late in the second half.

Syreeta Gambrell led Campbell with 10 points.
