Jan. 3, 2008

Game Notes

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team (13-1) will open its 2007-08 Atlantic Coast Conference schedule on the road at No. 4/4 North Carolina (13-1) this Saturday, Jan. 5. Game time is slated for 4 p.m. at Carmichael Auditorium.

The game will be televised live on the ACC Regional Sports Networks (Fox Sports South in Atlanta). Mike Hogewood and Charlene Curtis will call all the action. Tech fans can also listen to Richard Musterer and LaChina Robinson call the game on WREK radio (91.1 FM/www.wrek.org), Georgia Tech women’s basketball’s flagship station.

“We are very excited about the start of the ACC season,” head coach MaChelle Joseph said. “It is a great opportunity for us to open up at UNC. We are a team on a mission. We know who we are and we know what we are about. I look forward to seeing how we compete on a national stage against one of the most athletic teams in the country.”

The Yellow Jackets and Tar Heels will meet on the hardwood for the 58th time in the mid-afternoon matchup. North Carolina is coming off 10-straight victories over the Jackets and is 47-11 against Tech in the all-time series. The ACC designated “regional rivals” will meet once again this season on Feb. 10 in Atlanta.

Georgia Tech enters the game on an eight-game winning streak after defeating Jackson State, 79-42, on Wednesday evening for the program’s 450th victory. The winning streak is the longest current streak among all ACC Schools. Tech’s lone loss this season came at the hands of No. 7 Georgia in a closely contested battle on Dec. 2 in Athens, Ga.

Senior Janie Mitchell has been a catalyst for the Jackets early season run, averaging 17.2 points and 6.9 rebounds. Freshman Alex Montgomery has proved to be a triple-threat for Tech – scoring, rebounding and playing excellent defense. The Tacoma, Wash. native leads the team in blocked shots with 15 and has dished out 30 assists this season.

The Jackets will return home after the game and will get ready for their first home ACC matchup of the season against Wake Forest on Thurs., Jan. 10 at 7 p.m.
