CLEMSON, S.C. – Georgia Tech indoor track and field finished up an impressive first day of the Bob Pollock Invitational at the Clemson University Indoor Complex.
“We saw improvement in some areas this weekend,” head men’s coach Grover Hinsdale said. “The 800-meter group competed well – especially Gabriel Darosa. Others that impressed were Patrick Fleming, William Solomon and Hunter Mallard, who set a new indoor PR in the pole vault. The next two weekends are very important for us so we’ve got to get back at it and get to work on Monday.”
“It was important for the women to make some really good progress this weekend and they did just that,” head women’s coach Alan Drosky said. “Raven Stewart had a nice breakthrough yesterday that we knew was coming and Anna Hightower did a great job in the pole vault. Today, the women’s sprint group moved in a positive direction capped off by a strong relay effort, and Haley Anderson and Amy Ruiz had solid openers in the 800 meters. Now, we’ve got to build on this meet with a great opportunity next weekend.”
The Yellow Jackets will get back to it when they head to College Station, Texas, to take part in the Texas A&M Charlie Thomas Invitational on Feb. 2-3.
Women’s Highlights
Leading Tech off in the 800 run was Haley Anderson. The junior finished with a fifth-place time of 2:12.86 while Amy Ruiz turned in a ninth-place time of 2:14.84 – good for a new personal record.
In the high jump, Madeline Hammond continued her fine freshman campaign, finishing sixth overall with a personal-best mark of 1.62 meters.
To finish out the weekend, Tech’s 1600 relay team of Brianna Hayden, Henderson, Marinice Bauman and Domonique Hall finished sixth overall with a season-best time of 3:45.27.
Men’s Highlights
Georgia Tech had an impressive showing in the 800 run. Avery Bartlett paced the Jackets with a first-place performance (1:49.76) while Andres Littig (1:51.35) and Gabriel Darosa (1:51.72) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Senior Preston Smith finished seventh overall in the triple jump with a mark of 14.53 meters.
Freshman Hunter Mallard had another solid outing in the pole vault, finishing eighth with a new indoor personal-record mark of 4.83 meters.
