Jackets Begin Annual Holiday Tournament Friday Against Alabama State

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team returns to action this Friday and Saturday when they host the annual Georgia Tech/Atlanta Marriott NW Holiday Invitational at Alexander Memorial Coliseum. The Jackets (9-1) will square off in game one of the tournament Friday at 1 p.m. against Alabama State (2-3), while Brown (3-5) and UMass (2-7) will face each other at 3 p.m. The winners of the two games will meet in the championship game Saturday at 1:30 p.m., with the consolation game to precede the championship at 11:30 a.m.

All Georgia Tech games can be heard on the Georgia Tech ISP Sports Radio Network, WREK 91.1 FM, and online at www.wrek.org. Livestats for the games will be available at www.ramblinwreck.com.

The Jackets are on a four-game winning streak after taking three games over a five-day span in between final exams and Christmas break. Tech is led this season by junior Stephanie Higgs and a pair of sophomores in Chioma Nnamaka and Janie Mitchell, all of which are averaging in double-figures in scoring. Mitchell is leading the team with 6.8 rebounds per game, while Higgs is averaging 6.0 rebounds through the first 10 games of the season.

Sophomore point guard Jill Ingram is leading Tech with 29 assists (3.2 apg) and 24 steals (2.7 spg) while rookie backup point guard Jacqua Williams has recorded 21 steals in 94 minutes of play, an average of one steal every 4.5 minutes that she’s in the game.

Kasha Terry has returned for her final season and has been a force in the lane, averaging 8.0 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game, while senior Jessica Williams stands fourth on the team with 4.6 rebounds per game.

Following the New Year’s tournament, the Jackets will begin the conference portion of their schedule when they host the Miami Hurricanes on Thursday at 7 p.m. in a game that will be regionally televised by CSS (Comcast SportsNet).
