ATLANTA – Georgia Tech standouts Wes Hodges and Sarah Wood were named the Wendy’s Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, May 2, 2005.
Hodges, a sophomore from Ooltewah, Tenn., hit .526 (10-for-19) with a home run and nine RBI in four games away from home against Clemson and Georgia last week. Hodges led Georgia Tech to its first series win at Clemson since the 1993 season, and he had at least two hits in all four games. For the week, he posted a .684 slugging percentage and a .571 on base percentage. In three games at Clemson, Hodges hit .500 (7-for-14) with five RBI. The sophomore had three hits in the series opener on Friday night and added a pair of hits on Saturday. On Sunday, he had two hits and drove in three runs in Tech’s 6-4 win. On Wednesday at Turner Field, Hodges had three hits, including a grand slam, against Georgia. For the season, Hodges leads Tech with 77 hits and a .423 batting average.
Wood, a sophomore from Marietta, Ga., led the 17th-ranked Yellow Jackets to their first regular season ACC title this past weekend in the circle. Wood started the week with a save on Wednesday against Georgia Southern, retiring six of the seven batters she faced, striking out one. Against Maryland on Friday night, Wood came into the game in the bottom of the eighth inning with one out, and proceeded to retire the next eight batters, and 10 of 13, to lead Tech to a 3-2 win against the Terps and the top seed at the ACC Tournament. Wood worked five strong innings in the nightcap, allowing four hits, two runs and one earned run in the loss. Wood finished the week, 1-1, with a save, 0.66 ERA, six strikeouts and zero walks.
