THE FLATS – Georgia Tech ace Brandon Gold scattered six hits in eight innings Friday night as the 25th-ranked Yellow Jackets trounced No. 15 Coastal Carolina 9-1 at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Gold (5-2) went a season-best 8.0 innings and notched his first win since April 8 at Pitt and his first home win since March 18 vs. Virginia Tech. Gold has now gone at least 6.0 innings in each of his last seven starts and has gone at least 5.0 innings in all 11 appearances this season.

Freshman Brandt Stallings provided the bulk of Tech’s offense with a fifth-inning grand slam. Stallings went 2-for-4 with 4 RBI. Matt Gonzalez, Trevor Craport and Ryan Peurifoy each drove in a run.

• Georgia Tech broke the scoreless tie with a 3-run 3rd inning. With one out, Tech loaded the bases with three straight walks by Arden Pabst, Connor Justus and Carter Hall. Matt Gonzalez’s sacrifice fly scored Pabst for a 1-0 lead. With Kel Johnson at the plate, Justus and Hall scored on a fielding error by Coastal Carolina RF Anthony Marks.
• The Yellow Jackets added a run in the 4th for a 4-0 lead. Peurifoy plated Craport with an RBI single through the right side.
• Coastal Carolina finally scratched a run in the 5th. With two on and two out, G.K. Young hit an RBI single to right, scoring Matt Beaird to cut the lead to 4-1.
Brandt Stallings put the game out of reach in the 5th with a 1-out grand slam to left-center. The grand slam doubled Georgia Tech’s offensive output for an 8-1 lead.
• Craport added an insurance run in the 7th with an RBI groundout.
