THE FLATS – Behind the sensational performance of pitcher Brandon Gold, the 20th-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets scored early and often Saturday night to trounce No. 3 Miami 12-1 at Russ Chandler Stadium.
The win for Georgia Tech (31-14, 11-10 ACC) snapped the Jackets’ three-game losing streak to the Hurricanes (34-9, 14-6 ACC). Tech has now won four straight games and improved to 21-7 at home this season.
Gold (6-2) posted his second straight win, scattering six hits in 7.0 scoreless innings. The Alpharetta, Ga., native struck out four batters. He has allowed one run in his last 15.0 innings.
THE BASICS
• Georgia Tech snapped its 3-game losing streak to the Hurricanes. Tech trails the all-time series 34-55-2 (17-21-0 in Atlanta).
• Georgia Tech improved to 27-2 overall (10-2 in ACC play) when leading after 6 innings.
• Georgia Tech improved to 26-0 overall (10-0 in ACC) when leading after 7 innings.
• Georgia Tech improved to 27-0 overall (11-0 in ACC) when leading after 8.
• Tech is now 26-1 this season when allowing 5 or fewer runs.
• The Jackets are 9-3 when Brandon Gold starts this season.
• For the fourth straight weekend, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets is facing a top-25 opponent.
• Seniors Cole Pitts (business administration), Joe Wiseman (business administration) and Grant Wruble (business administration) graduated Saturday afternoon prior to the Yellow Jackets’ series opener with No. 3 Miami.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Georgia Tech struck first with a 3-run 2nd to take a 3-0 lead. Once again, Georgia Tech’s run production came with two outs. With the bases loaded and two away, Connor Justus hit a 2-RBI bloop single into shallow right field. Justus’ hit scored Brandt Stallings and Trevor Craport for a 2-0 lead. On the ensuing at bat, Ryan Peurifoy scored on 3B Edgar Michelangeli’s throwing error to 1st base.
• The Jackets doubled their output in the 5th to extend their lead to 6-0. With two on and one out, Brandt Stallings singled to centerfield, loading the bases. However, a fielding error by Carl Chester allowed Kel Johnson to score for a 4-0 lead. Two batters later, Pabst cleared the bases with a 2-RBI single to center for a 6-0 Tech advantage.
• Kel Johnson extended the Jackets lead to 8-0 in the 6th. With two out, Johnson drilled an RBI double down the right field line to score Matt Gonzalez. On the ensuing at bat, Miami’s Keven Pimentel was called for a balk which scored Johnson from 3rd.
• Tech hung another crooked number in the 7th. Pabst extended Tech’s lead to 9-0 with an RBI double down the left field line. A Wade Bailey RBI single to left scored Pabst for a 10-0 lead. Tech’s final run came on Matt Gonzalez’s RBI infield single.
• Grant Wruble’s pinch-hit RBI groundout in the 8th gave Tech a 12-0 lead.
• Miami ended Tech’s shutout bid with a solo home run in the 9th.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Junior 2B Wade Bailey returned to the starting lineup after a three-game absence due to injury. • Junior RHP Brandon Gold threw 100+ pitches for the fifth straight start.
• Gold went 6.0 or more innings for the eighth straight start.
• Senior OF Matt Gonzalez posted his eighth outfield assist of the season – his sixth resulting in a putout at home.
• Sophomore OF Kel Johnson went 3-for-4 with an RBI. It is his 16th multi-hit game of season.
• Junior SS Connor Justus posted his team-leading 21st multi-hit game of the season.
• Junior C Arden Pabst recorded a career-best three hits.
• Trevor Craport (13 games), Ryan Peurifoy (7 games), Brandt Stallings (6 games) and Pabst (8 games) all posted multi-hit games Saturday night.
• Georgia Tech recorded 10+ hits for the 28th time this season
• Craport owns a team-best 10-game hitting streak. Over the last 10 games, Craport is batting a team-high .514 (18-of-35).
• While Georgia Tech leads the nation with 62 double plays, it’s been 2B Wade Bailey and SS Connor Justus involved in most of them. Bailey and Justus have combined to turn 35 of Tech’s 62 double plays. Either Bailey or Connor has been involved in 57 of Tech’s 62 double plays.
• Connor Justus (84 games) and Kel Johnson (38 games) each extended their career-best consecutive starts streaks on Saturday vs. Miami.
