The previous year, it was the Bulldogs who defeated Tech in the Athens Regional and went on to Omaha. The teams first met in NCAA play in the 1987 Northeast Regional in Atlanta, which Georgia won. The teams are 2-2 against either other in NCAA play.

Tech advanced by defeating Jacksonville State, 16-5, and then winning two games against Texas Tech, 9-3 on Saturday and 5-3 in Sunday’s championship game. The Bulldogs defeated Clemson, 7-6 in 10 innings in Sunday’s second game to win the Athens Regional.
