THE FLATS – Georgia Tech track and field wrapped up the final day of competition of the 2017 ACC Outdoor Championships on Sunday, totaling eight conference honors over the three-day event at the George C. Griffin Track. Jeanine Williams and William Solomon took podium finishes for the Yellow Jackets.
“We had some great efforts today and throughout the weekend,” said women’s track and field head coach Alan Drosky. “Jeanine was fantastic and Kenya had another solid race. The 4×400 relay team came through with their best effort of the season when we needed it the most. The team finish is good movement upward from last year, but we missed out on some good opportunities to finish even higher.”
“Our team battled hard over the three days of these championships and I’m very proud of them,” said men’s track and field had coach Grover Hinsdale. “We had many more personal records today. We had three guys that made two finals each and scored in both events.
“This was an outstanding meet. My praise and compliments to Bryan Elliott and everyone in the Georgia Tech Athletic Association that had a hand in its success.”
Sophomore Jeanine Williams posted the third-fastest time in Georgia Tech history on her way to a second-place finish in the 100m hurdles. Her time of 12.99 earned her First-Team All-ACC and is a World Championship qualifying standard.
Charlotte Stephens bettered her time in the 1500m, crossing the line at 4:26.34. The 4×400 relay squad of Angelica Henderson, Lindsey Wheeler, Marinice Bauman and Domonique Hall finished first in their heat with a season-best time of 3:40.90 for an eighth-place finish overall.
At the end of the three-day competition, the women’s team finished 12th with 19 points, three spots ahead of the 2015-16 season finish.
Avery Bartlett had himself a day, earning All-ACC second team honors in both the 1500m and 800m with sixth-place finishes in both. Zachary Gunnz just missed conference honors in the 200m and 100m finals with seventh- and eighth-place finishes, respectively.
William Solomon topped off Saturday night’s success in the long jump with a sixth-place finish in the triple jump for All-ACC second team honors. He leapt to a career-best mark of 15.46m. Preston Smith also hit a career-best mark in the triple jump of 15.23m, coming just shy of conference honors with a seventh-place finish.
Andreas Ward raced to a fifth-place finish in the 110m hurdles final with a time of 14.35 for an All-ACC second team selection. Nahom Solomon put up a career-best time in the 5000m of 14:25.79.
The men’s squad finished in 11th in the conference with 25 points, improving three places and 10 points from the 2015-16 season.
