GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Kaela Davis of the Georgia Tech women’s basketball team has been named to the All-ACC First Team by the league’s 15 head coaches, ACC Commissioner John Swofford announced on Monday.
Davis was also named to the All-ACC First Team by the ACC’s Blue Ribbon Panel, which consists of media, school representatives and the ACC’s head coaches. She was also named the Georgia Women’s College Player of the Year by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
“I am very proud of Kaela and how she has led a very young team this season,” head coachsaid. “She has matured into a player that makes others better around her. She is very deserving of being named to the All-ACC First Team. Kaela has proven night in and night out that she is one of the best players in the ACC.”
Davis had a record breaking sophomore season, becoming the fastest player to score 1,000 career points and breaking the school’s single-season scoring record. With her 14 points against North Carolina in the second round of the ACC Tournament, Davis surpassed Tyaunna Marshall’s previous record of 609 points scored in a single season, which she accomplished her senior year in 2013-14. Davis currently has 621 points this season and is only the second Yellow Jacket to score at least 600 points in a single season.
This is the second All-ACC award of Davis’ career. She was named to the All-ACC Second Team by the league’s head coaches and Blue Ribbon Panel last year as a freshman. She was also named to the All-ACC Freshman team last year. Davis is the second Jacket under Joseph to garner All-ACC First Team honors and the fifth Yellow Jacketin school history. Tech’s four other All-ACC First Team members are(1997),(2003), Tyaunna Marshall (2013 & 2014), and Ida Neal (1989).
Davis has been nothing short of impressive in her second season for the Jackets, averaging 19.4 points per game which leads the team and is second in the ACC. Her 19.6 points per game average ranks fourth on Tech’s individual season records and her scoring average puts her at 36th in the nation. She led all ACC players in scoring in conference games with 19.2 points per game. Davis became the fastest GT player to score 1,000 career points after scoring 24 pts at Notre Dame. She broke the record of 55 games, scoring 1,000 points in 52 games .She currently has 1,215 career points which ranks 19th on Georgia Tech’s all-time scoring list.
The Suwanee, Ga. native, has scored in double figures in 30 out of 32 games this season and has scored at least 20 points in 14 games. Davis has recorded four 30 point games this season including a career-high 35 points against LA Tech. Davis is just one of three Yellow Jackets to have recorded at least four 30 point games in a single season.
Along with her 19.4 points per game, Davis is averaging 5.4 rebounds per game, 1.5 assists per game and 1.6 steals per game. She has led the Jackets in scoring in 21 games and in rebounding in four games.
Davis and the Yellow Jackets await their post season fate, which will be released on Monday, March. 16.
