Cubaj Named Top 10 for Katrina McClain Award

THE FLATS Lorela Cubaj was one of 10 power forwards named to the 2022 Katrina McClain Award watch list, as announced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association on Thursday.

In its fifth year, the annual award named after the two-time All-American and 1987 National Player of the Year, recognizes the top power forwards in women’s NCAA Division I college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates in November, which has now been narrowed to 10.

The Terni, Italy, native averages a double-double on the season behind 11.4 rebounds and 10.4 points per game. Cubaj continues to lead the Atlantic Coast Conference in rebounding and defensive rebounds per game, and ranks second in assists.

Cubaj also appears on the midseason “Wade Watch” list, Naismith Trophy for Women’s Player of the Year midseason team and Naismith Women’s Defensive Player of the Year watch list.

College basketball fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds for the Katrina McClain Award. In late February, the watch list of 10 players for the 2022 Katrina McClain Power Forward of the Year Award will be narrowed down to five. In March, those finalists will be presented to Ms. McClain and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee where a winner will be selected.
