THE FLATS – Accolades continue to roll in for Georgia Tech’s Lorela Cubaj as it was announced today the forward was one of 20 players named to the midseason team for the 2022 Jersey Mike’s Naismith Trophy for Women’s Player of the Year.
Cubaj was recently named to the 2022 Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Watch List, in addition to the John R. Wooden Award and Katrina McClain Award lists.
The Terni, Italy native leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in rebounds per game at 11.4 on average and has led the Yellow Jackets in rebounding in 18 games this season. Additionally, Cubaj leads the ACC with 9.1 defensive rebounds per game, ranks second with 4.3 assists per game and has recorded nine double-doubles on the year.
She owns 14 games scoring in double-figures and 16 games with double-figure rebounds. Cubaj boasts six games scoring 15-plus points, highlighted by a career-high 24 points against Florida State. She surpassed two remarkable milestones this season, becoming the 32nd to join the 1,000-career points club prior to setting the all-time rebounding record in Georgia Tech women’s basketball program history.
Cubaj is one four players representing the ACC, joining NC State’s Elissa Cunane, Virginia Tech’s Elizabeth Kitley and Louisville’s Emily Engstler.
The Atlanta Tipoff Club will announce its list of 10 semifinalists on March 8, its four finalists on March 25 and its National Player of the Year on April 2.
