THE FLATS – One of the best defensive players in the nation, Georgia Tech’s Lorela Cubaj has earned a spot on the midseason “Wade Watch” list for the prestigious 2022 Wade Trophy, as announced by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) on Wednesday. Cubaj was one of seven student-athletes added to the midseason list, which is selected by the WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches’ All-America Selection Committee.
Averaging a double-double on the year, Cubaj continues to the lead the Atlantic Coast Conference in rebounding, averaging 11.4 rebounds per game, which ranks 13th nationally. Cubaj is the only post player in the ACC to lead their team in assists as the Yellow Jacket averages 4.35 assists per game, ranking second in the league. The Terni, Italy, native has started all 23 games and is averaging 10.4 points per game.
Cubaj is one of four representing the ACC, joining NC State’s Elissa Cunane, Virginia Tech’s Elizabeth Kitley and Louisville’s Hailey Van Lith.
In its 45th year, the Wade Trophy is the oldest and most prestigious national player of the year award in college women’s basketball. It is named in honor of the late Delta State University head coach Lily Margaret Wade, who won three consecutive national championships with the Lady Statesmen. The Wade Trophy has been presented to the WBCA NCAA Division I National Player of the Year since 2001.
The WBCA will announce the four finalists for the honor in mid-March. The winner of the 2022 Wade Trophy will be announced in late March or early April on a date to be determined.
