Covering the Bases: Outfield

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball returns to the field to open the 2022 season with the 23rd annual Buzz Classic, beginning Friday with a doubleheader against Saint Joseph’s and Villanova at Mewborn Field. Replacing three starters from a season ago, the Yellow Jackets will have a combination of fresh and familiar faces in the outfield this upcoming season.

Following the graduation of Cameron Stanford, Breanna Roper and Crosby Huckabay, Tech has five Jackets in the wings prepared to step up. Seniors Kennedy Cowden and Ariella Jackson are joined by underclassmen Ella Edgmon, Auburn Dupree and Emma Minghini.

Highlighting the incumbents is Cowden, who saw significant action in 2021 appearing in 35 games, including 30 starts. Of those starts, 19 were in the outfield as she batted .244 on the year with 17 hits, a double and four homeruns for 20 RBI and 15 runs scored. The Powell, Tenn., native posted a .417 slugging percentage and a .360 on-base percentage, also stealing four bases. The upperclassman surged in the Buzz Classic last season, going yard in three straight games for 10 RBI to kick off the year.

Jackson also made an impact for the Jackets in 2021, appearing in 15 contests primarily being utilized for her speed as a pinch runner. The Pikesville, Md., native crossed the plate four times on the year. A stable of highly touted freshman in Edgmon, Dupree and Minghini will also have an opportunity to compete as they round out the position group.
