Buzzworthy: Catching up with Roddreka Rogers

June 5, 2015

Georgia Tech women’s basketball’s senior forward Roddreka Rogers is heading into her last year as a Yellow Jacket with great expectations. She has been working out for hours everyday this summer, making improvements on her game in preparation for a stellar senior season.

Rogers is busy with team workouts this summer and is working on improving her game, more specifically her shooting range.

“I’ve been working on shooting, that’s my weakness, so I’ve been getting in the gym putting up shots,” explained Rogers. “I spend at least an hour every day on shooting. Right now I’m working on my mid-range game, but I eventually want to work behind the three-point line.”

The rising senior was a key player for the Yellow Jackets this past season as she averaged a double-double (10.4 points, 10.2 rebounds) per game in ACC play. She led Georgia Tech in rebounds (335) and is second all-time in rebounds in Tech history.

Coming into her last season as a Jacket, she is both excited and nervous.

“It went by so fast,” Rogers said. “I feel like I was a freshman two days ago, and now I’m about to be a senior. I’m excited for it. It’s my last hoorah so I have to go out with a big bang, so I’m excited and nervous because I have to face the real world after.”

With individual improvement over the offseason from her and all of her teammates, Rogers has high expectations for the upcoming season.

“I really want to go back to the NCAA tournament,” Rogers said. “I went my sophomore year, so I would like to get back to that and win the ACC tournament.”

Q: Any plans for the summer?
A: No, just summer workouts. We just have the workouts all throughout summer and I’m also taking three summer classes.

Q: What did it mean to you to be selected to the 2015 All-ACC Academic Team?
A: It’s a good accomplishment. I know most people just try to make it through college, but I wanted to do something different. I felt like I needed to focus on academics as well. I wanted to prove that I could do my work and still play the sport.

Q: What’s beyond basketball for you?
A: Right now I’m leaning towards playing after college. At first I wanted to go to medical school, that was my plan if I didn’t do basketball, but I think now I want to play after I finish school.

Q: Who do you have winning the NBA Finals
A: I’m going with Steph Curry (and the Golden State Warriors). He’s been killing people out there.

Q: What’s your favorite social media app to use?
A: I’m not really a social media person, but I guess Instagram

Q: Who’s your favorite basketball player?
A: Lebron James, that’s my husband.

Q: What’s your favorite hobby outside of basketball?
A: Is eating a hobby? I like eating a lot (laughs). I like to shop and to travel as well.

Q: What’s the coolest place you have traveled to?
A: My sophomore year we went on a foreign tour for basketball, to London, Spain, and Paris. All three the of those were pretty awesome, especially going to the Eiffel Tower.
