THE BASICS:
• Georgia Tech was eliminated from the 2015 ACC Baseball Championship after falling to No. 24 Virginia 11-0 Tuesday in the opening round at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
• The Yellow Jackets will now wait until Monday’s NCAA Selection Show to learn their postseason fate.
• Tech falls to 32-23, while the Cavaliers improve to 34-19 and continue on to pool play in the ACC Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• A Virginia RBI single from Matt Thaiss made it 1-0 after the first inning.
• The Cavaliers pushed it 5-0 in the third thanks to a two-RBI single by Kenny Towns and a two-run blast from Pavin Smith.
• UVa added three insurance runs in both the fourth and fifth frames.
• Ryan Peurifoy broke up a perfect-game bid by Josh Sborz in the seventh with a lead-off double off the Blue Monster in left field.
• The game ended after six-and-half innings due to the tournament’s 10-run rule.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
• Tech starting pitcher Jonathan King (4-5) was tagged with the loss after three innings of work.
• Sborz (3-2) earned the win throwing a complete-game shutout with one hit allowed and a pair of walks.
• Peurifoy finished the day 1-for-1 with a double.
QUOTABLE:
“It was certainly Virginia’s day. They got a run in the first inning and it was all downhill from there. I knew they were a hot team, and they proved it today. Sborz was really good and it took us to the last inning to get a hit off him. They played well, swung the bat well and got a great start from Sborz.”
