ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech baseball team is ranked No. 5 in the nation in Baseball America’s preseason Top 25 poll while five Yellow Jackets – P/DH Micah Owings, 2B Eric Patterson, C Mike Nickeas, OF Jeremy Slayden and SS Tyler Greene – were named to the publication’s preseason all-America team.
Rice begins the season ranked No. 1 in the poll, while Louisiana State, Miami and Cal State Fullerton are ranked ahead of the Yellow Jackets. Four other schools from the Atlantic Coast Conference made the poll, including Clemson at No. 11, North Carolina at No. 15, Florida State at No. 22 and NC State at No. 25.
The Yellow Jackets are coming off a 44-18 record in 2003 and Tech won its second Atlantic Coast Conference championship in the last four years last spring.
Owings, the 2003 ACC Rookie of the Year, Patterson, a two-time first-team All-ACC selection, and Slayden were all named to the first-team preseason all-America squad. Nickeas and Greene were second-team preseason all-America selections.
