CARY, N.C. — Georgia Tech women’s tennis wrapped up its first fall tournament of the season on Sunday at the Duke Invitational. The Jackets picked up four wins in the final round of singles play.
“The Duke Invitational was great for our team to play matches against some really good players,” noted head coach Rodney Harmon. “It helped each player gain a clear perspective on where they are with their game and what areas need improvement before ITA Regionals at the end of October.”
Competing for the title of her draw, sophomore Kenya Jones, ranked No. 103 in the ITA preseason rankings, jumped out ahead of Elyse Lavender of LSU, taking the first set 6-1. Jones looked to take the title in the second set, but Lavender battled hard, taking the second set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (1), forcing the match into a deciding third set. Lavender took the draw with a 6-1 third set win.
Tech’s newcomers, Victoria Flores and Ida Jarlskog, each had strong showings in the tournament and both took home third place in their respective draws. On Sunday, Flores defeated Duke’s Ema Lazic, 6-2, 6-1, to take third place, while Jarlskog upended Northwestern’s Alex Chatt in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
Rounding out action for the Jackets in the consolation round, Nadia Gizdova defeated Danni Vines of Furman, 6-3, 6-4, while No. 111 Nami Otsuka did not drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 rout of Daniela Pedraza Novak of Illinois.
Tech returns to action at the ITF Sumter 25K, Oct. 9-15.
