Nov. 10, 2017

Box Score

THE FLATS – All seven of the RBIs driven in by the Yellow Jackets came off the bats of freshmen on Friday night, as the White Team defeated the Gold Team 5-2 in game one of the 2017 White vs. Gold World Series at Russ Chandler Stadium.

With the win, the White Team takes a 1-0 series lead over the Gold Team in the best of three series.

Freshmen outfielders Cole Neuber (1-for-3, BB, 3 RBIs, run) and Baron Radcliff (1-for-4, 3B, BB, 2 RBIs, run) combined to drive in all five runs for the White Team in the win, as Carter Hall, Joey Bart, Radcliff, Neuber and Oscar Serratos all crossed the plate for the visitors.

For the Gold Team, freshmen outfielder Colin Hall (2-for-5, 2 RBIs) drove in both runs for the home team, while sophomore Chase Murray (2-for-4, 2B, BB, run) and freshman infielder Michael Guldberg (2-for-4, 2B, BB) each had two base hits on the night.

The win went to junior hurler Jake Lee (1-0), who gave up just two earned runs on seven hits, two walks and four strikeouts over 4.0 innings of work, while fellow junior Keyton Gibson (1) registered the save throwing three scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Gold team’s Ben Schniederjans (0-1) was handed the loss, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks, while striking out three in 3.0 innings of relief work.

Both teams got on the scoreboard in the first inning, as the White Team took an early 1-0 lead in the top half of the inning on a two-out RBI single by Neuber before the Gold Team tied the game up at 1-1 on an RBI single to left center by Colin Hall in the bottom half of the inning.

After another RBI single by Colin Hall in the bottom of the fourth put the Gold Team on top at 2-1, the White Team answered back with a two-run triple to right field by Radcliff and a ground out RBI off the bat of Neuber to retake the lead at 4-2 midway through the fifth.

A lead-off single, stolen base and deep fly ball to center field to start the bottom of the seventh put Carter Hall on third with just one out when Neuber hit a sacrifice fly to right to plate the older Hall and extend the White Team’s lead to three at 5-2.

Gibson would take the ball in the bottom of the seventh and after hitting the lead-off batter would get a double play ball in the seventh, pitch a clean eighth and then get out of trouble with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth to secure the win for the White Team.

Game two of the three-game set will take place on Sunday, Nov. 12, at 1 p.m. ET.
