ATLANTA – Georgia Tech graduate Nicholas Thompson shot a one-over-par 71 at Philadelphia Country Club on Tuesday, finished in a tie for 13th place in stroke play qualifying and advanced to match play at the U.S. Amateur Golf Championship at Ardmore, Pa.

Thompson, from Coral Springs, Fla., tees off at 9:20 a.m. Wednesday morning against Dustin Pimm of Sandy, Utah in his first round match at the par 70, 6,846-yard Merion Golf Club. His two-round score of 143 was eight shots behind medalist James Lepp of Washington.

It is the second straight year Thompson, who earned his Management degree from Tech in May, has qualified for match play. He advanced to the round of 16 last year. His progress in Wednesday’s match can be followed at U.S. Amateur.org.

Incoming freshman Adam Cohan, from Wayne, Pa., shot six-over 76 Tuesday at Merion and tied for 93rd in the stroke-play qualifying, missing the cut to 64 players.
