Tech Hosts UNC Monday on RSN

Georgia Tech returns home for a key ACC matchup with the North Carolina Tar Heels this Monday at 7 p.m. in a game that will be televised on the Regional Sports Network. The contest will be shown live in Atlanta on Fox Sports Net South, with Beth Mowins and Debbie Antonelli, but will appear on a tape-delay basis in both North and South Carolina at 10 p.m. Comcast and Sunshine will also show the game on a tape-delay basis due to other sporting events occuring at the same time, as Sunshine will air the game at 10 p.m. that evening, while Comcast’s showing will be at 1:30 a.m.

Tech is coming off a 12-point loss at Clemson after knocking off Virginia and Maryland at home, while North Carolina defeated Maryland by 15 points its last time out after dropping the two previous games to NC State and Duke.

The game will be broadcast live on WREK-Radio 91.1 FM in Atlanta and online at www.wrek.org, with Richard Musterer calling the play-by-play and Kurt Hoyt providing the color analysis, while the North Carolina broadcast can be heard on WCHL-AM 1360 in North Carolina with Jones Angell and Jan Boxill. Series Notes

* North Carolina leads the series with the Jackets, 41-11 and owns an 17-6 record against Georgia Tech in Atlanta. The Yellow Jackets and Tar Heels first met on January 9, 1980, with UNC taking home the victory, 93-61. * Georgia Tech’s last win against UNC came in Chapel Hill by an 81-62 score on January 17, 2002. The last time that the Jackets won on their home court was in January, 2000.

* North Carolina began the series with Tech by winning the first 17 meetings before the Yellow Jackets defeated the Tar Heels by two in February, 1988, 76-74 at Alexander Memorial Coliseum. The Jackets then took the next three games before an 81-77 win by UNC in 1990 broke the four game winning streak. From 1988 through February, 1991, Tech won seven of nine contests with the Tar Heels.

* The Tar Heels have won the last four meetings by scores of 71-62 at AMC in 2002, 72-67 in Atlanta in 2003, 76-64 on the Tar Heels home court in 2003 and 63-56 in Chapel Hill earlier this season.

* Georgia Tech’s highest point total against the ‘Heels came in 1991, when the Jackets scored 101 in a 15-point victory at home. The lowest point total came just six years ago when UNC defeated Tech 69-48 at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.

* The Tar Heels’ highest point total versus the Jackets came in 1983, when they defeated Tech, 99-58, in Atlanta. Georgia Tech defeated the Tar Heels in 2000 by a score of 55-44, for UNC’s lowest point total in the series.

* Clemson leads the series at Littlejohn with a 19-4 edge on their campus.

Jackets vs. Tar Heels: Last Time Out

Freshman Ivory Latta scored 18 points, including two free throws to put to the game out of reach, and 13th-ranked North Carolina beat Georgia Tech 63-56. The Tar Heels, who led by many as 10 points in the second half, were in front 57-56 with 2:17 left in the game after Megan Isom hit a 3-pointer for Georgia Tech. Isom led the Yellow Jackets with 16 points. Freshman Camille Little hit a follow shot with 42 seconds left to give the Tar Heels a three-point lead before Latta came back with a pair of free throws with 22.6 seconds to go. Little made a pair of free throws with five seconds left and finished with 10 points. Georgia Tech took advantage of poor North Carolina shooting in the first half. The Tar Heels shot 7-of-24 from the field, but went 10-of-14 from the free-throw line during the half while Georgia Tech had no attempts. North Carolina led by as many as seven points in the first half, but the Yellow Jackets battled back to a 25-25 tie at the break. Latta opened the second half with the first of her four 3-pointers. Then, with 13:09 left, she hit another to give the Tar Heels a seven-point lead. Her final 3-pointer pushed the lead to 57-53 with 5:11 left. North Carolina benefited from free throws, going 24-of-30 from the line. Georgia Tech was 3-of-6.

Tech Record Book Versus UNC

* Fallon Stokes set a career high in scoring against the Tar Heels, with 34 points coming in the first game of the series last season.

* The Yellow Jackets have defeated ranked Tar Heels teams four times in history, with the most recent victory coming on January 17, 2002. The Jackets are 4-20 all-time against ranked UNC teams, winning three of those games at Alexander Memorial Coliseum and the most recent one on the Tar Heels’ home court.

* On February 13, 1988, Ida Neal banked in a 35-foot buzzer beater giving the Yellow Jackets their first victory over UNC, 76-74, in a game that also gave then-head coach Bernadette McGlade her first victory over her alma mater.

* With the Jackets’ 91-84 win over the sixth-ranked Tar Heels in 1999, it marked the third consecutive year that Tech had defeated an opponent ranked in the top 10.

* During the 1999-00 season, the Yellow Jackets defeated three ranked opponents, beginning with the 12th-ranked Tar Heels to advance to the quarterfinals of the NWIT.

* Georgia Tech’s 81-62 victory over North Carolina in January, 2002, marked the 350th win in school history.

* The Jackets’ 64 points in the second half against UNC in 1991 is tied for third all-time for most points in a half and is the most points ever scored against an ACC opponent in a single frame.

* Georgia Tech’s 33 free throws against the Tar Heels in 1989 marked the most shots ever made from the charity stripe for the Jackets in a single game.

* The Jackets have had four different players score 30 or more points against the Tar Heels, as LeeAnn Woodhull had 32 in 1983, Dolores Bootz scored 32 in 1988, Ida Neal recorded 30 in 1989, and Fallon Stokes had a career-high of 34 against UNC in 2003.

* Danielle Donehew set a Tech single-game record with seven free throws agains the Tar Heels in 1999 and then broke that record against UNC the following year, with eight.

Looking at the Tar Heels

With all five starters scoring in double figures, the North Carolina women’s basketball team defeated visiting Maryland 79-64 its last time out, ending its two-game losing streak. Freshman guard Ivory Latta led the Tar Heels with 13 points, and three players – freshman Camille Little, junior Nikita Bell and senior Candace Sutton – scored 12 each. Sophomore La’Tangela Atkinson was the fifth UNC player in double figures with 10 points and led the Tar Heels in rebounding with nine. Maryland led by three, 28-25, with 2:35 remaining in the first half, but the Tar Heels tied the score on a three-point play by senior Carrie Davis and took the lead as Little and Bell hit two free throws each. With UNC up by three, Latta hit a three-pointer with a second on the clock to give her team a 35-29 advantage at the break. The Tar Heels held the lead throughout the second half, increasing it to as many as 20 with 7:33 to play. Maryland shot 32.4 percent for the game and committed 20 turnovers to 15 by UNC. Leading the Tar Heels this season are the freshmen Latta and Little. Latta leads the team with an average of 14.1 points per game and also leads the team with 98 assists while Little has scored 14.0 points per game and leads the Tar Heels with 8.1 rebounds per game. La”Tangela Atkinson is the only other Tar Heel in double figures in scoring, as she is averaging 10.5 points per game. She has recorded 75 assits and 38 steals on the season. Center Candace Sutton is second in the league and leads the team with a total of 41 blocks this season. As a team, UNC is shooint 43.7 percent from the field and 70.5 percent from the line.

Last Time Out for the Jackets

Amanda White scored 15 points to lead Clemson to a 59-47 victory over visiting Georgia Tech Thursday at Littlejohn. The win ended a two-game win streak for the Jackets and a five-game losing streak for the Tigers. Senior Alex Stewart scored 15 points while pulling down a career-high 13 rebounds, including 11 on the offensive end of the court, for the Jackets. She dished out six assists in the game and had two steals while turning the ball over just twice in her 38 minutes of play. The only other Yellow Jacket in double figures was freshman Stephanie Higgs, who came off the bench to hit three from beyond the arc and totaled 11 points on the night. The Jackets kept the game as close as eight points until Maggie Slosser hit a jumper with 12:39 remaining in the game. The Tigers led by as much as 12 points at 6:45 as they controlled the second half of play, 28-22. Georgia Tech out-rebounded the Tigers 49-37, but hit just 9-of-13 from the charity stripe, while Clemson scored 15 points from the line on 19 attempts. The Jackets shot a season-low 24 percent from the floor in the contest, including going 4-for-36 from the three-point arc, while Clemson connected on 43.5 percent of its shots, and 44 percent from beyond the arc. The Tigers scored 26 points in the paint, as compared to the Jackets’ 16. Clemson took a 31-25 lead into the locker room in a first half which saw two ties and 11 lead changes. Amanda White came off the bench for the Tigers to score 12 points while Stephanie Higgs and Alex Stewart scored eight and seven points, respectively, for the Jackets. Neither team led by more than four points at any part of the frame until White hit a layup with 1:14 remaining on the clock to put Clemson up 28-23.
