Complete Tech golf schedule

Norman, Okla. – Georgia Tech will be the host institution for the 2011 Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship, an annual collegiate golf event conducted by the Golf Coaches Association of America. The event will be staged at Hawks Ridge Golf Club, March 20-22, in Ball Ground, Ga.

Tech will be joined in the 16-team field by Alabama, Baylor, Duke, East Tennessee State, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Pacific, South Carolina, Southern California, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UCLA and Washington State. Georgia (2005) and UCLA (2007) are past winners of the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship while 2010 runner-up Southern California leads a contingent of five teams (Iowa, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UCLA) returning from last year’s tournament. Baylor, East Tennessee State, Illinois, Pacific and Washington State will be making their first appearances in the event.

Head coach Bruce Heppler’s team has participated in the event five times previously, reaching the finals four times and the semifinals once. Most recently, the Yellow Jackets fell to UCLA in the 2008 finals at Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Ga.

The event is one of four events on the college golf calendar that Tech will host during the upcoming school year, beginning with the annual Carpet Capital Collegiate Sept. 10-12 in Rocky Face, Ga. The United States Collegiate Championship returns after a one-year hiatus on Oct. 24-26 at the Golf Club of Georgia, and Tech will host a smaller-field spring event at the Golf Club of Georgia in April.

“We’re proud to sponsor the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship and thrilled it will feature yet another strong field of players,” said Nick Raffaele, Vice President, Sports Marketing, Callaway Golf. “Callaway prides itself on winners and this year’s field will again yield a true champion at Hawks Ridge Golf Club.”

A Bob Cupp design, Hawks Ridge was added to Golf Digest’s prestigious list of America’s Top 100 Golf Courses in its first year of eligibility. Considered by Cupp to be his consummate achievement, Hawks Ridge tests the skills of the game’s most experienced players and presents new challenges every round.

“We’re very pleased to host this year’s Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship at Hawks Ridge Golf Club,” said Hawks Ridge Director of Golf Chuck Knebels. “Not only will our members and golf fans in the community be able to root for local favorites Georgia Tech and Georgia but will also see some of the best teams and players from all of college golf.”
