ATLANTA – Coming off a dramatic doubleheader sweep of Jacksonville State on Tuesday, the Georgia Tech softball team (11-4, 0-0 ACC) heads to Baton Rouge, La., for the LSU Purple and Gold Challenge, which opens Friday.
The Jackets play UAB at 4 p.m. and the host Tigers, who are ranked fifth nationally, at 6 p.m. on Friday. Tech will take on McNeese State at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by Long Island at 4 p.m. Bracket play opens at 8 p.m. on Saturday and concludes with the championship game at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The Yellow Jackets will be meeting each of these teams for the first time.
Tech is led by sophomore shortstop Tara Knudsen, who is batting .489 with four home runs and 17 runs batted in, all team-highs. Junior Tara Neff (.308) and senior Jamie Frost (.300) are also hitting above .300. Second baseman Felicia Coursey leads the team with 13 runs and four stolen bases from the leadoff spot.
Sophomore Erin Voeltz (3-2) leads the Tech pitching staff with a 0.77 earned run average. Freshman Jessica Sallinger (6-2) owns a 1.06 mark and has fanned 74 batters in 52.2 innings pitched. She is over halfway to the Yellow Jacket single-season strikeout record of 127 in only nine appearances.
