Tech Golfers Storm Into Lead at Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate

Feb. 13, 2002

WAIKOLOA, HI – The Georgia Tech men’s golf team has won two of the last three team titles at the Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate and the Yellow Jackets have taken a major step toward their fourth team title as they are in first place after 18 holes of play. The 54-hole tournament is being contested at the 6594-yard, par-72 Kings’ Golf Course at the Waikoloa Resort.

The top-ranked Yellow Jackets were paced by the play of first-round leader Troy Matteson, who fired a first round score of 5-under-par, 33-34=67 and is tied with Oregon’s Aaron Byers for the individual lead. Matteson began his round on the back nine and did not make a birdie until the 16th hole, but go things going on the front side with birdies on Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 5.

Tech finished the day with a team score of 7-under-par, 281 and lead Stanford (285) by four shots entering Thursday’s second round.

Joining Matteson in the event’s top 15 for the Jackets is senior Kris Mikkelsen, who carded a 1-under-par score of 35-36=71 in the opening round to stand as part of a 10-way tie for 13th place. Freshman Chan Wongluekiet joins him in that spot as he also finished the opening round with a score of 1-under-par, 36-35=71.

Just one shot behind that pair is rookie Nick Thompson, who recorded a score of even-par, 37-35=72 in the first round and is one of 18 players tied for 23rd place. The final member of the Yellow Jacket contingent in the field is senior Matt Weibring, who is one of 19 players tied for 41st place following his opening score of 1-over-par, 36-37=73.

The Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate will continue on Thursday with the second round of play at the Kings’ Course and will conclude on Friday with the final round of competition.
