Tech Golfers 12th After 36 Holes of Play at Ping/Golfweek Preview

Oct. 7, 2002

Stillwater, Okla. — The Georgia Tech golf team, like the rest of the field, struggled with difficult scoring conditions on Monday, and is in 12th place after 36 holes of play at the Ping/Golfweek Preview in Stillwater, Okla. The 54-hole event is being contested at the par-72, 7,290-yard Karsten Creek Golf Club, which will also serve as the site of the 2003 NCAA Championships.

The Yellow Jackets finished the day with a two-round total of 38-over-par, 307-307-614, which puts them well off the pace of team leader Augusta State (300-291-591), entering Tuesday’s final round. Only three sub-par team rounds were carded on the day as teams tried to solve the difficult Karsten Creek layout.

Senior Troy Matteson was Tech’s top individual competitor on the day, finishing with a 36-hole total of 5-over-par, 73-76-149, to stand among five players tied for 18th place. Matteson trails individual co-leaders Emmett Turner (74-69-143) and Scott Jamieson (75-68-143), both of Augusta State, by six strokes after two rounds.

Following Matteson in the individual standings are sophomore Nicholas Thompson and freshman Thomas Jordan, both of who are part of a nine-player logjam in 46th place at 11-over-par, after scores of 77-78-155 and 81-74-155 respectively. Sophomore Chan Wongluekiet, who is competing for the first time in 2002-03, is one of three players tied for 58th place after an opening-day total of 13-over-par, 78-79-157. The final member of the Yellow Jacket contingent is senior Adam Cranford, who is tied with one other player in 64th place at 16-over-par, 79-81-160.

The Ping/Golfweek Preview will conclude on Tuesday with the final round of play beginning at 8 a.m. Live scoring of the event is available at http://www.igolftheworld.com/Events/Team/pinggolfweekpreview/Results/results.asp?RefreshInterval=4&Division=Georgia%20Tech&IDEvent=262
