>> Georgia Tech and Georgia meet for the 364th time in the series Tuesday night at Turner Field in the annual Kauffman Tire Spring Class for Kids. The game, which is one of the largest fund raisers for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and averages nearly 20,000 in attendance, begins at 7 p.m. and airs on Fox Sports South.
>> The Yellow Jackets are looking to sweep the Bulldogs after winning 13-6 in Athens in March. Tech trails the all-time series 201-160-2, but has had the upper-hand recently by winning four of the past five regular-season series. Since 2000, the series favors Tech, 27-25. The Jackets have won three of the last five games at Turner Field.
>> Tech is looking to sweep Georgia in football, men’s basketball and baseball for the first time since 1970-71.
>> Only 10 pitchers nationally have more wins than sophomore closer Zac Ryan, who is 9-1 with seven saves and a 2.74 ERA. Ryan has logged a win or a save in 16 of his team-leading 26 pitching appearances. He and Ohio State’s Trace Dempsey (9-1, 7 saves, 3.38) are the two relief pitchers in the NCAA with nine or more wins. Ryan is tied for the ACC lead in wins and is tied for fifth in saves. He has been credited with four of Tech’s last eight wins.
>> Tech is 8-2 in its last 10 games and hitting .306 and slugging .480 over that stretch. Two Jackets sluggers carry significant hitting streaks into the game — Matt Gonzalez (13 games) and A.J. Murray (7). Gonzalez is hitting .377 over his streak (20-for-53) with three doubles, two homers and 14 RBI. His longest career hit streak is 17 in 2013.
>> Murray, who is set for his 100th consecutive start on Tuesday, is tied for the ACC lead in homers (14) and among the league’s top 10 in runs (48), RBI (49) and slugging (.604) — seven of his 14 homers have come in the last 11 games and he has scored at least a run in 11 straight games.
>> Tech is outscoring opponents 80-37 in the eighth inning and beyond this season. That includes a +30 margin in the eighth (50-20), +11 in the ninth (25-14) and +2 (5-3) in extra innings. 18 of Tech’s 32 wins are come-from-behind victories, including five when trailing in the eighth inning and four when trailing in the ninth. Tech is 4-1 in walk-off games, and 3-1 in extra-inning games. Five of Tech’s last seven wins have been comeback victories.
>> Sophomore C Arden Pabst is among the NCAA leaders in runners caught stealing and caught-stealing percentage. Pabst, who is on the watch list for the Johnny Bench Award, has thrown out 23 would-be base stealers this season, which are eighth-most nationally. He is the first Tech catcher since Matt Wieters in 2007 to throw out 20+ runners in a season..
>> The Jackets continue to be one of the nation’s best defensive teams, currently ranked 12th in double plays (52), 43rd in fielding percentage (.974 — matching school record set last season) and own the sixth-most outfield assists nationally (14). Tech led the nation in both double plays (school record 77) and outfield assists last season. Since 2012, Tech’s 245 double plays are second-most nationally.
