Tech-FSU Baseball Suspended

May 2, 2003

ATLANTA – Severe thunderstorms in the Atlanta area forced a suspension of Friday night’s college baseball game between Georgia Tech and Florida State with the Seminoles leading 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning.

The game will resume at 4 p.m. Saturday, with the regularly-scheduled second game of the series to begin no earlier than 7 p.m. Admission to the suspended game will be free of charge, but spectators must have purchased tickets to enter the game two at 7 p.m.

Tech’s Kyle Bakker (7-0) and FSU’s Trent Peterson (8-1) were engaged in a pitching duel when lightning caused the game to be halted at 8:01 p.m. The 10th-ranked Yellow Jackets were batting with one out and an 0-2 count on center fielder Brandon Boggs. The game was suspended at 9:18 after a delay of one hour and 17 minutes.

The No. 2 Seminoles had scored the game’s only run in the top of the third by loading the bases against Bakker with a hit batsman and two walks. Tony McQuade bounced back to Bakker, but the junior lefthander threw to first instead of attempting to force the runner at home, allowing Aaron Cheesman to score. After an intentional walk to re-load the bases, Bakker then induced a double-play grounder from Jerrod Brown to end the inning.
