THE FLATS – Freshman Kel Johnson homered twice and sophomore Ben Schniederjans pitched a shutout over five innings to lead #TeamGold to a 4-0 victory Monday in the decisive game of Georgia Tech’s White-Gold Series at Russ Chandler Stadium.
#TeamGold claimed the three-game set after taking Saturday’s opener, 7-6. The teams played to a 9-9 tie on Sunday.
Johnson drove in all four runs for #TeamGold, smashing a three-run home run to dead center in the third inning and following in the sixth with an opposite-field solo shot to right. The rookie hit a series-best .700 (7-for-10) with two homers, five RBI, four runs and two walks.
Boosted by Johnson’s bat, Schniederjans scattered four hits and one walk over his five innings on the mound to earn the victory. Reliever Joe Wiseman entered to get #TeamGold out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth and pitched a clean seventh to nail down the save.
Daniel Spingola and Daniel Gooden both doubled for #TeamGold. Keenan Innis and Matt Gonzalez were each on base twice for #TeamWhite with singles and walks.
#TeamWhite starter Matt Phillips retired the final eight in order after the three-run shot by Johnson, but was on the hook for the tough-luck loss. He fanned eight and walked none over his five innings.
Monday’s game marked the end of the Yellow Jackets’ fall practice schedule. Georgia Tech begins defense of its 2014 ACC Championship – the program’s ninth conference title – when the regular-season begins February 13.
