THE FLATS – Junior RHP Dusty Isaacs set the tone with a three-hit shutout over five innings and #TeamDove opened Georgia Tech’s annual White-Gold Series with a 5-2 victory over #TeamFarmer Friday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium. Games 2 and 3 are set for Monday and Tuesday at 3:45 p.m.
Senior Brandon Thomas went 3-for-5 and scored a run, while senior Sam Dove had two hits, an RBI and scored for his Gold squad, which opened a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning and never looked back.
It was a pitchers’ duel early as Isaacs countered senior righty Buck Farmer for the White. Isaacs picked up the win by firing five innings with three hits, no walks and seven strikeouts. Farmer pitched five strong with four hits, two runs (one earned), no walks and eight strikeouts in 64 pitches, but was on the short end of the decision.
Junior Alex Cruz started at third, had a double, scored and then worked three innings on the mound for #TeamDove with two unearned runs, a walk and a strikeout. Freshman lefty Sam Clay finished off a scoreless ninth for the Game-1 save.
Thomas got the scoring started for #TeamDove in the first with a two-out double to right and scored thanks to consecutive infield errors by #TeamFarmer. Freshman Jordan Hunt added to the lead with an RBI single in the fourth to score Dove, who led off with a single.
The visitors extended the lead to 4-0 with a two-run seventh inning, highlighted by Dove’s RBI liner up the middle.
Farmer’s White team pushed across a pair of unearned runs in the eighth, but would get no closer. Thomas Smith led off with a walk, and freshman Cole Miller followed with a single. A sacrifice bunt moved both into scoring position, and a two-out error allowed both to score and cut the margin in half.
Junior Daniel Palka added insurance for #TeamDove with an RBI groundout that scored freshman Dylan Dore in the ninth.
A pair of sophomore righties take the mound in Monday’s Game 2, with #TeamFarmer’s Josh Heddinger squaring off with #TeamDove’s Cole Pitts.
